Stranger Things sets three-part farewell with final season premiere dates

After years of anticipation, Netflix has finally announced when Stranger Things will return for its fifth and final season—and it’s not just one date, but three. The sci-fi sensation is getting an epic sendoff, with the story unfolding in volumes across the holiday season, promising an emotional and cinematic finale to a series that helped redefine streaming television.

A three-act goodbye begins in November

Fans of Stranger Things have been waiting since 2022 for the return of Hawkins, Indiana, and its interdimensional horrors. Now, their patience has been rewarded. During the Tudum 2025: The Live Event—an annual Netflix showcase—streamer officials revealed that Season 5 will arrive in three parts: Volume 1 premieres November 26, Volume 2 follows on Christmas Day, and the series concludes with a grand finale on New Year’s Eve.

The announcement was made with considerable fanfare. Lady Gaga, who will join Wednesday in its second season, performed live at the event, while key Stranger Things cast members Noah Schnapp, Caleb McLaughlin, and Finn Wolfhard appeared onstage. Their co-stars Millie Bobby Brown and Gaten Matarazzo also joined in via video, sharing memories from nearly a decade of working on the iconic show.

For viewers, the staggered release offers a uniquely drawn-out farewell, allowing fans to savor the final chapters of the beloved series during a season already rich with nostalgia and reflection.

A long road to the Upside Down

The delay between seasons was notable, especially for a series known for leaving fans on the edge of their seats. Season 4 wrapped in 2022, introducing audiences to the show’s most terrifying villain yet: Vecna, portrayed by Jamie Campbell Bower. However, production on Season 5 was halted due to the dual writers’ and actors’ strikes that gripped Hollywood in 2023.

Filming for the final season began in early 2024 and officially wrapped in December of the same year. According to Netflix and showrunners Matt and Ross Duffer, the scope of the production was nothing short of epic. In a behind-the-scenes feature released in January, the Duffer Brothers revealed that they’d captured more than 650 hours of footage, calling the season “eight blockbuster movies” rolled into one.

“It was super intense and emotional to film—for us and for our actors,” Matt Duffer said. “We’ve been making this show together for almost ten years. There was a lot of crying. There was SO much crying.”

What to expect from the final chapter

While specific plot details remain closely guarded, the tone of the final season promises to be as high-stakes and emotionally charged as ever. Set in the retro-tinged town of Hawkins, Stranger Things has long blended sci-fi horror with coming-of-age drama, and the fifth season is expected to push those boundaries even further as the characters face their ultimate confrontation with the dark forces of the “Upside Down.”

Returning cast includes series stalwarts like Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Joe Keery, Natalia Dyer, Matthew Modine, and Charlie Heaton. Sadie Sink, Priah Ferguson, Joseph Quinn, and Maya Hawke also return—actors whose careers have flourished alongside the show. Netflix also confirmed that Linda Hamilton, best known for her role in Terminator, will make a guest appearance in Season 5.

Given the Duffer Brothers’ comments about the emotional nature of filming and the multi-part release, viewers can likely expect major character developments, heart-wrenching farewells, and explosive twists. If early glimpses are any indication, Stranger Things is preparing to go out not with a whimper, but with a thunderclap.

A streaming era-defining legacy

Since its premiere in 2016, Stranger Things has been one of Netflix’s most-watched and critically celebrated original series. It has won 12 Primetime Emmy Awards and spawned countless cultural moments—from Eggo waffles to Kate Bush’s chart resurgence. With its genre-blending storytelling, nostalgic 1980s aesthetic, and emotional core, the series helped establish Netflix as a dominant force in original content.

More than a television show, Stranger Things became a generational touchstone, resonating across demographics and continents. It launched the careers of young actors, reinvigorated others, and built a fan base as passionate as it is diverse.

As the show prepares to close the door on Hawkins forever, it’s not just an ending—it’s the final act of a modern myth. By spreading its final season across the year’s most emotional holidays, Netflix has ensured that fans will not just watch these last episodes, they’ll feel them. The lights on the alphabet wall are flickering for the last time. One thing is certain: in the world of Stranger Things, even goodbyes are an adventure.
