‘The Naked Gun’ franchise is making a comeback this summer

On April 3, Paramount released a teaser trailer for the upcoming reboot of The Naked Gun starring Liam Neeson — and it looks like the legacy of laughter will live on in the new installment of the classic comedy trilogy.

Neeson, in his first comedic starring role, plays Frank Drebin, Jr., the son of Frank Drebin, a character who Leslie Nielsen portrayed in all three of the original Naked Gun movies and the short-lived TV series Police Squad! which spawned the film franchise.

The Absolution actor has branched out of drama before. Neeson made a cameo in Ted 2 and TV series like Derry Girls and Life’s Too Short. Still, in an April 2024 interview with ComingSoon.net, Neeson said his comedy skills have “to be proven.”

“I’m slightly nervous of it. A little Stephen Colbert sketch or Ricky Gervais, I’m okay because it’s short. But a whole film, we’ll see. We’ll see,” he told the outlet.

Now, with the first look of Neeson as Frank Drebin, Jr. online, here’s everything we know about 2025’s The Naked Gun.

What is the new Naked Gun about?

Plot details for The Naked Gun are being kept under wraps, but like the first three movies, viewers can expect a cop spoof filled with ridiculous sight gags.

In the Naked Gun movies, bumbling Detective Frank Drebin uncovered a sinister plot, and he ultimately became the hero when finding a resolution. By the sounds of it, his son will be doing the same.

“Only one man has the particular set of skills… to lead Police Squad and save the world! Lt. Frank Drebin Jr. follows in his father’s footsteps,” the movie’s synopsis reads.

Who is in the cast of The Naked Gun?

Neeson stars in The Naked Gun as Frank Drebin, Jr., the son of Leslie Nielsen’s character from the original trilogy. (Nielsen died at 84 from pneumonia on Nov. 28, 2010.)

The rest of the cast includes Pamela Anderson, Paul Walter Hauser, CCH Pounder and Kevin Durand, among others.

In October 2024, Neeson told PEOPLE how impressed he was with the comedy chops of his costar, Anderson, who plays a “femme fatale” in the new movie.

“With Pamela, first off, I’m madly in love with her. She’s just terrific to work with. I can’t compliment her enough, I’ll be honest with you. No huge ego,” he said. “She just comes in to do the work. She’s funny and so easy to work with. She’s going to be terrific in the film.”

“Whether I can carry it or not, I honestly don’t know,” Neeson added. Anderson disagreed, saying, “He’s being humble. It was hard to keep a straight face in scenes together.”

“He brings out the best in you … with respect, kindness and depth of experience. It was an absolute honor to work with him,” The Last Showgirl star continued, calling Neeson “the perfect gentleman.”

When will The Naked Gun be released?

The new Naked Gun will premiere in theaters on Friday, Aug. 1, 2025.

Former Saturday Night Live writer Akiva Schaffer is helming the sure-to-be silly sequel. In addition, Family Guy and Ted creator Seth MacFarlane is attached as a producer.

The police movie parody is one of several sequels slated to hit multiplexes this summer.

Others include Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning, Jurassic World Rebirth, M3GAN 2.0 and Freakier Friday, to name a few.

On April 3, Paramount released a teaser trailer for the upcoming sequel. The preview begins with a dramatic hostage situation at a bank. Ignoring the SWAT team outside, a schoolgirl licking a lollipop casually strolls into the bank lobby.

When she encounters one of the bank robbers, the girl reveals herself as Frank Drebin, Jr. in disguise, who uses his lollipop to defeat the confused criminals.

A hostage then asks Frank Drebin, Jr. who he is, and he responds, “Frank Drebin, Police Squad,” turning to the camera to add, “The new version.”

The teaser also ends with a bit where the lead character and his fellow police officers pay tribute to their dads. The preview ends with a nod to O.J. Simpson, who played Detective Nordberg in the Naked Gun trilogy.

The original Naked Gun trilogy — which includes 1988’s The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!, 1991’s The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear and Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult, released in 1994 — are all available for digital rental and purchase.
