Kevin Bacon Explains Why Wife Kyra Sedgwick Did Not Like Him When They First Met: ‘It Was Not Love at First Sight’

The longtime couple’s first meeting happened when they were both teenagers

Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick have been happily married for more than 35 years. However, their relationship didn’t start on the best of terms.

The 66-year-old actor and the 59-year-old actress formally met on the set of their 1988 movie, Lemon Sky. However, during an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show on Monday, April 7, Bacon revealed that they ran into each other years prior.

“I will tell you that I was doing a lot of Off-Broadway, many years before that. I was 19 so she was 12, I think. Her mom had seen me in some plays Off-Broadway, and she knew that little 12-year-old Kyra wanted to be an actor,” Bacon recalled.

Sedgwick’s mom got her tickets to attend one of his shows, and she ran into him while he was on a lunch break.

“I was buying a sandwich in the deli around the corner. This 12-year-old girl came up and said, ‘Hi, I liked you in the play.’ And, according to her, I said, ‘Thanks, sweetie.’ You know, kind of misogynistic,” Bacon recalled.

He continued, saying, “She tells this story that when we first met doing Lemon Sky, she said, ‘You know we met in the village after that play that time. Do you remember that?’ And I went, ‘Yeah I do remember that.’ And she went, ‘Really?’ And I went, ‘No.’ “

“So she did not like me. It was not love at first sight,” he concluded.

The couple found common ground on set, and their love story began.

Bacon and Sedgwick tied the knot in 1988 and are now parents to son Travis, 35, and daughter Sosie, 33.

“Motherhood really defines me,” Sedgwick said during a 2021 interview on The Drew Barrymore Show. “I mean I’ve been an actor forever and you know I have my own career, my own life and I always have, but ‘mom’ is my title. It’s the thing I think about in the morning, it’s the thing I think about when I go to sleep.”
