Sheeran and Seaborn met during childhood, secretly got married in 2018 and now share two daughters, Lyra Antarctica and Jupiter
Ed Sheeran’s wife Cherry Seaborn helps to maintain a bit of normalcy in his life.
In a new interview on the Call Her Daddy podcast, the 34-year-old Grammy winner opened up about why his 32-year-old wife serves as a “grounding force” for him.
The “Thinking Out Loud” singer-songwriter recalled his first few years of fame and told host Alex Cooper about how he initially “really struggled” with how his life changed. “Relationships wise — not just romantic — but just relationships in my life, friendships, family, everything shifted,” he said.
Sheeran spoke to the belief that people change upon getting famous, noting that he didn’t for the “first three years” of his career taking off. “I was exactly the same person, and everyone around me changed in their way of treating me, or acting or talking or, like, leaking things,” he explained, admitting he eventually became “a paranoid f—er.”
“At the beginning, it’s that transitional period where you’re just trying to work out who you are and whether I am my stage name, and that’s me the whole time, and I’m a pop star,” said Sheeran, “or whether there’s two human beings, and I can be a son to my mum without having to be a pop star or a husband without having to be a pop star and then sort of separating the two.”
Over the past few years, however, the superstar has found musicianship to be “a really, really fun job to dip into.”
“It’s really fun to be a pop star for the night and go to the Grammys and sort of be like, ‘Wow, look at everyone.’ But then it’s important to be able to go home and be a regular human being,” he said. “And I think that’s why I don’t live in Los Angeles because I don’t think I’d ever switch off. I think I’d always just be ‘pop star.'”
Sheeran then spoke about navigating life with Seaborn, whom he met as a child, married in 2018 and now shares two daughters with: Lyra Antarctica, born in 2020, and Jupiter, born in 2022.
“And honestly, Cherry is the biggest grounding force. Like, anytime that anything is a little bit too Hollywood, she’s like, ‘Bro…’ And especially because I grew up with her, there’s always a lens of Suffolk over it,” he said.
“Like, I tried to build a bowling alley in our in our backyard, and she was just like, ‘Come on, man. You don’t need that,'” continued Sheeran, who said he’s “not really” good at bowling but enjoys the sport anyway.
“She just doesn’t want our kids growing up and it being like, you know, the Richie Rich house,” he noted of Seaborn.
