Hailee Steinfeld Says She Was ‘Beyond’ Surprised by Josh Allen’s ‘Incredible’ Proposal

Hailee Steinfeld is still not over fiancé Josh Allen’s proposal!

The Sinners star, 28, opened up on the Friday, April 11 episode of Live with Kelly and Mark about Allen, 28, popping the question in November 2024 and what she thought about the whole event.

When host Kelly Ripa asked Steinfeld, “Was it a very romantic proposal, the whole thing?,” she replied, “Oh my God, incredible.”

The actress went on to say that she was “beyond” surprised at the engagement — which happened in front of a pink and red rose flowered arch in front of a waterfront decorated with candles and pink flowers, as seen in a shared Instagram post.

Following the news of their engagement, a source close to the couple told PEOPLE that their families are excited about the engagement news. “They’ve been head over heels from the start,” the insider said. “Their families are thrilled.”

Since her fiancé plays for the Buffalo Bills, the actress often finds herself in the east coast city — which is a far cry from her west coast California lifestyle. She told the Live with Kelly hosts that she has visited the city in the winter, but “being in Buffalo right now is like being there in the winter for a California girl.”

Steinfeld previously revealed on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that she was feeling the love from Buffalo Bills football fans and Buffalo residents since her engagement to the NFL quarterback.

“I have been given a very warm welcome,” said Steinfeld. “The people are incredible. It’s such a wonderful, wonderful place. I love it so much.”

Steinfeld and Allen were first linked in May 2023 shortly after rumors circulated that the quarterback had called it quits with then-girlfriend Brittany Williams. A source later confirmed their relationship to PEOPLE in May 2023, sharing at the time that the new couple was “having fun.”

In October 2023, the couple made their first public appearance together at an NHL game at the KeyBank Center in Buffalo. At the game, Steinfeld and Allen were snapped in the stands in what appeared to be a suite as they watched the season opener. The couple then made their relationship Instagram official in July 2024, after Allen posted romantic photos of himself and Steinfeld embracing in front of the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

In March 2025, The Hawkeye told PEOPLE that so far, her engagement to Allen has been “such a special time for so many reasons.”

“I couldn’t be more excited,” she said. “I’m so happy — we’re so happy — and we’re just soaking in every moment.”
