HBSO celebrates christmas with The Nutcracker choreographed by Norwegian Johanne Jakhelln

The HCM City Ballet Symphony Orchestra and Opera (HBSO) is gearing up to enchant audiences with its captivating performances of the classic ballet The Nutcracker at the Opera House on December 6, 7, and 8. This year’s rendition, featuring choreography by Norwegian Johanne Jakhelln Constant, adds a unique cultural flair to this beloved holiday tradition.

Originally premiering at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1892, The Nutcracker has captivated global audiences and become a cherished performance worldwide. As a result, HBSO’s adaptation first graced the stage in 2001 as part of Norway’s Transposition program, which sought to introduce classical music projects to Vietnam.

Among the standout performers in this year’s production is Đỗ Hoàng Khang Ninh, who brilliantly portrays Clara. Afterwards Đỗ Hoàng Khang Ninh will study in Norway as she earned a scholarship to study with the Norwegian National Opera & Ballet.

Based on E.T.A. Hoffmann’s 1816 tale, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, the ballet follows Clara’s magical journey after she receives a Nutcracker soldier from her godfather, Drosselmeyer. On Christmas Eve, Clara dreams of a whimsical world where the Nutcracker transforms into a prince and takes her on a thrilling adventure through the Kingdom of Sweets.

Lị Thùy Trang from HBSO emphasizes, “The Nutcracker performs worldwide every December, closely tying to the festive spirit of Christmas.” As a result, the performance captivates audiences of all ages with its family-friendly appeal.

Meanwhile under the expert direction of conductor Lê Ha My, the ballet will come alive at the Opera House, located at No.7 Lam Sơn Square in District 1, starting at 8 PM. Therefore she says: Do not miss this opportunity to experience a beautiful holiday tradition that highlights the strong cultural ties between Vietnam and Norway!
