Jake Gyllenhaal Gets Support from Girlfriend Jeanne Cadieu as He Opens Record-Shattering Othello on Broadway

The actor was first linked with the French model in 2018, and he has since teased wedding bells in the couple’s future

Jeanne Cadieu was by Jake Gyllenhaal’s side as he took the stage for the Broadway opening of William Shakespeare’s Othello.

As the Gyllenhaal and Denzel Washington-led revival opened at New York City’s Barrymore Theatre on Sunday, March 23, everyone from Samuel L. Jackson and Jamie Lee Curtis to Spike Lee and Joe Biden turned up to show support. Gyllenhaal, who plays the villainous Iago to Washington’s Othello, was joined by both his sister, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and longtime partner, Cadieu.

Though he wears army fatigues in the actual production, Gyllenhaal, 44, looked dapper at the opening offstage, posing alongside Cadieu at N.Y.C.’s Tavern on the Green in a silky, double-breasted suit, which he wore over a halfway-buttoned white undershirt.

Meanwhile, his girlfriend, a French model, complemented him in a black, high-neck gown with a unique and abstract silhouette, the top resembling a simple rectangle. She wore her hair in a simple, slicked-back updo.

The Donnie Darko star wrapped his arm around Cadieu on the red carpet, the couple both sporting matching soft smiles.

The Othello opening wasn’t just star-studded (and for Gyllenhaal, a date night of sorts), it was also a big night in Broadway history. The play already made its way into the history books, grossing $2.8 million alone in one week, more than any play has ever made in 7 days on the Great White Way.

Gyllenhaal and Cadieu, though largely private, do step out together at industry events — including, most recently, a date night at the 2025 Golden Globes.

In January, the couple once again wore color-coordinated looks. For Gyllenhaal, a classic black suit with a white button down shirt and for his longtime partner, a sleeveless black blazer dress with a white lapel.

The pair were also spotted out and about together in N.Y.C. last summer.

Gyllenhaal was first romantically linked to Cadieu in late 2018, when they were spotted on walks in both the Big Apple and Paris. They later made their first joint red carpet appearance in September 2021 at the premiere of The Lost Daughter, which is directed by the actor’s sister Maggie, 47.

The couple has made several more public appearances since, including the Paris premiere of Gyllenhaal’s film Ambulance, a 75th-anniversary screening of The Innocent at the Cannes Film Festival and a special London screening of his Road House remake in 2024.

Though the couple is ultra-private, Gyllenhaal has teased that there may be wedding bells in their future.

In a 2024 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Gyllenhaal was asked when he and Cadieu plan to tie the knot, and shot back a playful response. “I’m supposed to tell The Hollywood Reporter that?” the actor joked at the time, adding, “I’m not going to give you timing.”

But, he continued, “I think we all get into that space of work, work, work, and for a long time my career took precedence, but I’m at a point in my life where I realize that family really is the only thing that matters to me.”
